The client approached us with a design requirement to facilitate a living, kitchen, dining and bedroom on the roof of a residential building in Shakarapura, Bangalore. The requirement was to retrofit the addition on the prevailing 60 year old load bearing structure. The prevailing site conditions were first studied, and, it was found that majority of the addition must rest on the peripheral load bearing walls. The semi-private spaces, such as living, kitchen, and, dining were placed onto the ground floor to create an open plan with the private spaces such as bedroom, bath and closet on the mezzanine floor. After continuous study with various engineers, it was found that the load of the addition will not be held by the load bearing structure below, due to the bearing capacity of the roof slab.
